Clifden in County Galway Clifden on Ice
Ice Skating Rink Weekend Christmas Market with local foods and crafts and more.
Clifden is one of those Irish towns everyone loves to visit. First, there's the drive to get there. You've got to travel past Connemara National Park, four sets of mountains, several heritage centres, a myriad of lovely lakes and huge vistas. The town of Clifden is located amidst the mountain scenery of the 12 Ben Mountains and just minutes from Connemara's particularly lovely coastline. There are plenty of little restaurants, pubs, woolen shops, boutiques, antique and souvenir shops. In short, the Clifden thrives on visitors. But, there's also a thriving art community. The area is beautiful and varied, so it has always attracted artists, musicians, poets and playwrights. Clifden became a haven for writers, poets, artists and revolutionaries – Oscar Wilde, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Padraic Pearse, Tim Robinson and John Moriarty all came seeking and finding inspiration in this lovely corner of Ireland. Clifden hosts an annual Arts Week each September. You can walk the Victorian streets, stopping in to view paintings and displays or enjoy the street musicians. The official events are varied - plays, lectures, concerts - the whole gamut of Clifden's artistic heritage is on display. The town was founded between 1785 and 1839 and was one of the last towns to be built in Ireland. Two fabulous 19th century churches dominate the town. St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church was built in 1879 and Christ Church (Church of Ireland) was built in 1853. Just to top it all off, the area boasts championship golf, horse-riding, walking, cycling, hill walking, beaches, fishing, scuba diving, painting, national parks, castle ruins and over 5,000 years of living history.
