Clifden

Known as 'The Capital of Connemara', it offers many excellent restaurants and pubs, and in recent years it has become one of Ireland's most sought after holiday destinations, where visitors and local people mingle, giving the town a unique and enjoyable cosmopolitan flavour. In August, the town hosts the Connemara Pony Show and in September the Clifden Community Arts week takes place.

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

The abbey was originally built in 1868 and is now the home to the Irish Benedictine Nuns. Facilities at Kylemore include a visitor's centre, restaurant, an exhibition house in the main reception rooms, Gothic church, gardens, lake and mountain walks, pottery, craft and souvenir shop.

Kylemore abbey located in the kylemore pass in Connemara, is home to the Benedictine nuns.

The inhabitants of the Aran Islands are Gaelic speaking. Aran boasts several massive prehistoric forts including Dun Aengus, set on a 250 foot precipice.

Aran Islands

The Irish speaking Aran Islands are renowned for their unique way of life where age old traditions co-exist comfortably with modern living. The islands have a rich history which can be seen from their ancient monuments, from both prehistoric and Christian times. The shortest route is the 20 minute ferry crossing from Rossaveal on the Connemara coast. We will be happy to make the arrangements for you.

Connemara Golf

The World famous championship golf course, Connemara Golf Club, is just a 15 minute drive from Clifden. The 27 hole course is situated overlooking the Atlantic ocean and plays to par 72. We will make reservations for you in advance of your arrival if you wish.

Connemara offers the visitor superb golf courses, which have been fashioned out of a naturally beautiful landscape.

There are plenty good fishing spots to be found for freash water fishing

Fishing

There is salmon fishing just across the road. A river walk all the way into town is being upgraded and we now have a fine fishing bridge just over the road. The walk will extend all the way into the town of Clifden. This local river features salmon and some sea trout angling. Less than 100 yards behind Mal Dua House is a small lake where brown trout can be fished.

Clifden offers many activities. The Owenglin River provides great opportunities for fresh water fishing, whether you are a beginner or more experienced. For the Sea Angler there is excellent deep sea angling for a wide range of different species. Blue shark is very common around the Clifden and Aran Islands area and the occasional porbeagle is caught there, too. Clifden also has some of the best sandy beaches in Ireland.

Equestrian and Bicycling Activities

Connemara has a strong equestrian tradition and offers great facilities for horse-riding. Enjoy the scenic beauty of Connemara by renting a bike and cycling through the breath-taking landscape Clifden has to offer. Byrnes Mal Dua House offers guests bicycles for rent. Visits to Connemara National Park and historical tours are also recommended.

Walking

Connemara is a walker's paradise and walkers of all abilities can find their routes suitable to their ability. Un-trafficed lanes abound as do cross country hikes amidst the spectacular scenery, sweet, fresh air and splendid isolation. We can organise daily walks and customised archaeological field trips, weekend programmes or week long walking holidays. We also provide drying rooms.

For people who enjoy cycling Mal Dua House offers rental bicycles.

If you are interested in joining a walking tour of the Connemara and wider region, we recommend Terry Carruthers of Walking Experiences. Naturalist, published author and well travelled guide, Terry has been organising and leading highly acclaimed tours in the west of Ireland for many years.

Touring

To see more than a slice of Connemara, you'll need a car. Our map gives some sense of the scale, with whole mountain ranges and dozens of peninsulas to explore.

We can recommend Budget Car Rental Ireland which has auto rental offices at all the major airports (Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Galway!, Knock, Kerry) and also in many of the larger cities - Dublin, Cork, Galway, Killarney. In particular, we like that they have two offices in Galway (Airport and City Centre) and they're also in nearby Knock and Shannon Airports.

Budget's prices are very competitive and they have every class of car from teensy Opals to upper range Mercedes' available for rental. Click here or on the logo for a price quote.
